How Small Businesses Are Using The Cloud (& why many more will soon join them)

It’s no secret the cloud ROCKS- but do you know how many of your small business peers have already taken their business operations up up and away? A LOT! And with good reason too, the cloud allows them to grow their business, save money, improve operations and so much more! It’s no surprise that experts expect 78% of small and medium businesses to be utilizing cloud-based services within the next 5 years! Who’s Using The Cloud?

43% of American small businesses reported using cloud computing in 2013 (only 5% said they used cloud computing in 2010, just three years earlier).

58% of businesses are using but public and private cloud services for small business.

70% of businesses polled said they would move some, more, or a significant amount of their processes to the cloud within the next 12-24 months

65% of businesses will be utilizing some sort of cloud computing service within the next couple of years

78% of small and medium businesses will be utilizing cloud computing to improve areas such as data security and marketing by 2020

On the other end, an estimated 9% of small business owners still aren’t sure what the cloud is.

Why Are They Using The Cloud?

42% of small businesses are using the cloud for improved data backup and for greater recovery ability

40% love that cloud services afford them 24 hour access to their applications and data, from anywhere!

38% reported that the cloud saved them money on operations and services

35% said the cloud allows them to easily scale and to be more flexible

What Are They Doing with The Cloud?

Most companies use the cloud for several activities, these were the most common:

63% email or collaboration software (such as chats, like Slack)

56% use office & productivity tools

55% use online or “e-commerce” cloud services for small business

54% use an cloud-based IT system

52% perform all marketing functions in the cloud

50% use the cloud for all sales operations

48% use the cloud for customer service needs

37% use the cloud for their HR department needs

What Does The Cloud Do For Them?

According to the New Jersey Institute of Technology study, organizations that adopt cloud services for small business and cloud technologies report greater scaling ability, faster workflows, increased availability, and shorter time to market for their products and services.

40% reported improved ability to move into new geographic markets thanks to cloud-based services

37% said cloud-based technology helped simplify their internal operations

33% said they experienced better delivery of internal resources

31% of businesses reported the cloud helped their employees find new ways to work, connect and collaborate.

23% said cloud-based services and apps helped them achieve faster roll out of new business
