As a young Kiwi, it’s a rite of passage to leave the comforts of home to live and work overseas. Many ditch their jobs, say goodbye to friends and family and jump on a 30-hour flight to the other side of the world. They’ve got nothing but a heavy suitcase, a two-year visa and a dream to find their place in a new city for a little while.
Many Kiwi travellers arrive in a new place and find themselves bunking in a hostel with four snoring strangers for nights on end. Days are spent hunting for jobs in a city with a population twice the size of their home country!
The thrill of the job-chase may well be the dream for some, but not for this Kiwi. I wanted to set down in London ready to start a job with a company I believed in and that would be proud to work for. Luckily for me, I got a job with Xero UK.
Making money while traveling the world
One of the coolest things I’ve ever heard our CEO Rod Drury say is how great it is that he can help people at Xero do their OE while earning a living. This refers not just to Kiwis heading abroad – it includes Xeros in Australia, the UK and the US wanting to try somewhere new. It can’t get much better than experiencing a new place while making money. And when you work in a global, cloud-based company, almost anything is possible.
It’s evident that Rod really does support this notion. As I write this blog, I’m sat at a desk at Xero’s UK HQ. Opposite me are two Kiwis who’ve done just what I have. There are a few more dotted around the office too. In fact, sometimes it feels just like being at home. I can hear them saying things like, “Sweet bro,” and “Pass the pineapple lumps?”.
But if you’re worried that Xero sets up in foreign countries and only hires Kiwis, rest assured there are plenty of locals around too! I’ve heard “Init?” and “Hey bruv” at least three times today.
Transcending walls, borders and oceans with technology
Thanks to technology, mobility, flexibility and communication are all important features of Xero culture. The cloud enables Xero customers to work from home, from a café down the street or from a different city or country. And enables our staff to do the same. Thanks to technology like Google Apps, we’re always connected.
And with our secure, global network, Xeros can roam from one office to another and connect without any hassle. We can walk into any of our 17 locations around the world, open our laptop and connect right away. We don’t even need to ask for the wifi password, which in my book is a real win. Tools like Google Hangouts, Chromecast and Yammer help us to keep in touch globally with the Xero family… so when we arrive at a new office, we never have to feel like a stranger.
Now four months in to my overseas experience with Xero, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to head abroad. With the UK on my doorstep and Europe in my backyard, I’m able to see it all while earning money and doing what I love for a company I believe in.
