Today, as part of Responsible Business Week, we’re looking at the role businesses play in nurturing the talent of the future. At Sage we’re supporters of the Apprenticeship Scheme and have seen many young people join our business to grow their talents and careers. Mark Scott is one of our former Apprentices, and here he talks about his experience.
I am passionate about bringing apprentices into the workplace whether they’re joining a start up business or a global company. It’s important we give these opportunities to young people and as a business you’ll be pretty surprised what apprentices can achieve, and even what you’ll learn from them!
As a former apprentice I want to talk to you about my experience and how I have managed to secure a role as an in-house recruiter at Sage.
Starting out as an apprentice has been a whirlwind of travel, education and big learning curves. My experience over the past few months has made me realise how much hunger I have to recruit with a passion and style which gives an extraordinary candidate experience and a big headache for a hiring manager (because all of the candidates are so strong).
But my passion began when I started my working life at Sage as an apprentice in our HR team. I remember being overwhelmed by the building, the people and the experience I had whilst applying for the role. The role took me into the Recruitment Team first and after meeting them and seeing how friendly and supportive they were I just slotted straight into the role.
Just over a year ago I managed to secure a permanent position as a Recruitment Coordinator, this gave me a great insight into the candidate experience through supporting the recruiters and managing the different systems and processes.
In January I was promoted to a Trainee Recruiter in the team. This was a massive jump as I now have more accountability and my own roles to look after. This is where the big learning curve has come in! I really think in your first month in a new job you learn 60-70% of the role. I’ve traveled down the country and I’ve even advised senior managers on ways to recruit which for a twenty year old it’s scary!
I’ve now been here nearly two and half years and I’m still in the recruitment team and I love it! I work in a team with a great bunch of experienced recruiters and coordinators who have come from all kinds of recruitment backgrounds. I absorb as much information from my colleagues as possible every single day; you could probably say I’m a bit of a sponge.
I am really proud to work for Sage as they have given me so much since I have been here and I know where I want my career to go with them. Being a recruiter is a challenging job but Sage do make it easier as the brand awareness of being the only FTSE100 technology software company, our benefits and culture of putting customers at the heart of everything we do set us apart from others. With that combination and putting our personal touch to the process it really creates an extraordinary customer experience.
This is all good but how would it benefit you as an owner, CEO or manager in a company? Well… there are some stats on the National Careers Service website that show how not only will the apprentice benefit from the experience gained, your company will too!
